What are PDAs?
Patient decision aids (PDAs) are resources such as handouts or videos that present balanced information about the benefits, risks, and alternatives of a healthcare decision. Ideally, PDAs should be written in plain language at the average reading level (6-8th grade in the U.S.).
PDAs have consistently been shown to significantly improve patient understanding and satisfaction while also having the potential to reduce lawsuits by standardizing and documenting information shared about a procedure.
Although many practices have informational aids for patients, studies suggest that current PDAs for MIIPs tend to be written well above the average reading level with difficult readability scores. We want to change that!
How are our PDAs different?
It’s all about quality. The Interventional Initiative PDAs undergo an extensive vetting process by interventional radiologists across practice settings and diverse patient focus groups.
Each PDA is initially developed from a literature review by members of our team with formal training in ethics and plain language writing. They are then reviewed by interventionalists to ensure the information accurately reflects common practices. Diverse patient focus groups then critique how this information is presented to maximize understanding.
Our initial PDAs will be available in English and Spanish with plans to expand to additional languages.

Proven in clinical trials
Patients who received a PDA prior to talking to their clinician had significantly higher satisfaction and understanding while also feeling that they had their questions better answered and their clinician listened to them better.
