Thoracentesis

A minimally invasive procedure to drain fluid around the lungs

Español

What happens after my procedure?

You can go home after this procedure if you do not have other reasons to stay in the hospital. You can remove the bandage the next day.  Do not soak the wound until it is healed.

If your clinician sends the fluid to the lab, it may take a few days for the results to come back.

The fluid may build up again, and you may need another thoracentesis.

When to call your clinician or 911?

Fever of 101°F (38.3°C) or higher

Uncontrollable bleeding or leaking at the wound

Sharp chest pain, sudden trouble breathing or shortness of breath

Lightheadedness, rapid heartbeat, looking pale
