What happens after my procedure?
You will need to stay in the hospital at least one night to monitor for complications.
Your TIPS will be checked by ultrasound over the next year to make sure it is working properly. After one year, an annual ultrasound may be performed.
Leave the dressing on for 24 hours, then remove it and shower.
You may feel groggy from the medicines used during the procedure to keep you comfortable. Headache and nausea may occur but usually do not last longer than 12-24 hours.
Soreness and bruising may occur at the procedure site.
When to call your clinician or 911?
Fever of 101°F (38.3°C) or higher
New or worsening trouble breathing
New or worsening belly pain
Worsening confusion
Bleeding, racing heart, pale complextion
Trouble lying flat to sleep at night, new or worsening swelling in the belly or ankles
